One man shot in Waterloo and a teen was charged with obstruction of justice, police say
A man was shot inside a Waterloo apartment Thursday night and teenager who was arrested at the scene was charged with obstruction of justice on Friday, police said.
The victim suffered gunshot wounds in both of his legs but the injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, Waterloo Police Detective Andrew Dahlem said.
Aden Widel, 18, of Waterloo was charged Friday with obstruction of justice. A detention hearing was conducted Friday afternoon and Judge Chris Hitzemann ordered Widel to be released from custody.
Charging documents allege Widel “removed evidence from the scene and attempted to keep the items from being discovered” as part an effort to obstruct the prosecution of a man.
Columbia attorney Arthur Morris was appointed to be Widel’s public defender, according to Monroe County court records. Morris said Friday he could not comment on the case because he had not yet received the court order of his appointment.
The shooting was reported at 7:05 p.m. Thursday in 400 block of West Fourth Street.
Dahlem said investigators believe the shooting was “not a random” attack and there is not a threat to the public’s safety.
A motive and details of the circumstances of the shooting have not been released.
Widel was ordered to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on Nov. 28.
