A 20-year-old man faces criminal charges including home invasion and attempted murder after police responded to a physical altercation involving his mother at a Troy home on Saturday.

Gabriel H. Kammerer of Troy was crouched over his mother trying to stab her in the neck when police arrived, according to the prosecutor’s petition seeking to detain Kammerer in jail until his trial.

Officers responded to the home in the 500 block of Lanahan Drive after receiving an open-line 911 call in which the dispatcher heard a woman screaming for help, police stated in a news release.

Kammerer is accused of stabbing his mother in the abdomen, injuring a lung. She also had a puncture wound on her neck and cuts on her hands, arms and legs, the prosecutor’s petition states.

She was transported from the scene by EMS for medical treatment. The Troy Police Department stated she is expected to survive.

Kammerer’s mother reported to police that she had told her son he was no longer able to stay at the residence because the homeowner sought an order of protection earlier this year after he threatened to kill the homeowner with a knife, according to the prosecutor’s petition.

Kammerer has been charged with the following crimes:

  • Attempted first-degree murder, a Class X felony.
  • Home invasion, a Class X felony.
  • Aggravated domestic batter, a Class 2 felony.
  • Aggravated unlawful restraint, a Class 3 felony.
  • Aggravated battery, a Class 3 felony.

Online court records did not list an attorney for Kammerer.

He is scheduled to have a pretrial detention hearing Thursday afternoon to determine whether he will continue to be held in jail or released pending trial.

Illinois stopped using a cash bail system on Sept. 18. Since then, people charged with serious offenses receive detention hearings to determine whether they should remain in jail until their trials.
