Here’s the latest on the investigation into Belleville shooting
A victim in a shooting last week near downtown Belleville “has not been forthcoming” during the investigation, police said Wednesday.
The man suffered a gunshot wound to his hand on Monday, Feb. 26. He was treated at a hospital and released on the same day of the shooting.
“Charges have not been filed because the investigation has not reached a point to where probable cause has been established to present to the State’s Attorney,” Belleville Assistant Police Chief Mark Heffernan said in a statement. “The victim has not been forthcoming during the investigation.”
Police received a call at 7:20 a.m. Feb. 26 about shots fired in the area of the first block of East D Street.
Witnesses told police they heard about three gunshots and that there was “a confrontation” between two men, who left the area when the shots were fired.
Investigators discovered evidence of shots being fired and that someone was hit, police said. A short time later, at 8:48 a.m., they were notified that a man checked into a local hospital with a non-life threatening bullet wound to his hand.
Investigators interviewed the man, but have not been given sufficient evidence to present a case to the state’s attorney’s office. It’s not clear if the shooter has been identified.
Herffernan said there would be no further comment while the investigation is ongoing.
