A Cahokia Heights man was shot to death Wednesday morning at his home.

Stephan Monigan, 68, was pronounced dead at the scene at 2003 Maple Tree Lane, according to St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr. The slaying is the town’s fourth in less than two weeks.

The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis has been activated to investigate the slaying, according to Cahokia Heights police.

Lonnie Middlebrook, a man who said he lives next door to the crime scene, told the BND he came home early Wednesday and saw his neighbor’s door open. As he approached, he saw Monigan’s body.

“I’ve been over here 20 years and never had any problems like this,” he said.

Police have not released any additional information about the case.

The slaying is at least the eighth in Cahokia Heights since the beginning of the year, according to BND coverage.

The Major Case Squad is investigating another recent case in Cahokia Heights. Terrance Booker, 17, of the 1300 block of Julie Avenue, was found shot to death June 29 in the front yard of a home on Williams Street.

Authorities have identified a ``person of interest” in connection with the case - a 20-year-old Cahokia Heights man. They are asking the public for help in locating the man. Anyone with information is asked to call the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis at 618-332-4277 or CRIMESTOPPERS at 1866-371-8477.
