Man charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of southern Illinois woman
A 38-year-old man was charged with first-degree murder Sunday in the slaying of a woman in Herrin, according to the Illinois State Police.
Tyler Mezo, of Herrin, is being held in the Williamson County Jail, a news release states. Herrin is about 15 miles northeast of Carbondale in southern Illinois.
The Herrin Police Department asked the Illinois State Police to investigate the shooting death of a woman at a home in the 3100 block of Weaver Road on Saturday, the release states. The woman, whose identity was not released, had multiple gunshot wounds.
“ Mezo was identified as the shooter and subsequently taken into custody,” the release states. “On July 14, 2024, after a thorough investigation, ISP presented the case to the Williamson County State’s Attorney’s Office for official charges to be filed.”
Agents of the Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation were assisted by the Herrin police, Troop 10 officers and Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services, the release states.
