Metro-east man faces attempted murder charge in shooting that left 1 injured

An East St. Louis man has been charged with attempted first-degree murder in connection with a shooting this week that left one person injured.

Dwight N. O’Neal, 41, also was charged with aggravated battery discharge of a firearm and unlawful possession of firearm revoked Firearm Owners Identification, or FOID, card, according to a news release Wednesday from Illinois State Police.

The victim’s name and medical condition were not released.

East St. Louis Police Department officers received a report of a shooting near the intersection of 18th Street and Missouri Avenue on Sunday and a description of the suspect was broadcasted to officers, according to the news release.

“Officers observed the alleged suspect, later identified as O’Neal, fleeing on foot from the area. O’Neal was apprehended and a weapon was recovered,” the news release states.

The victim went to an area hospital for treatment, police said.

O’Neal was charged Tuesday and he was being held in the St. Clair County Jail Wednesday.

Officers from Illinois State Police, the city police department and the East St. Louis Housing Authority Police Department responded to the scene.

No other information about the shooting was released.
