U.S. Marshals assist in arrest of man wanted in metro-east shooting

Illinois State Police have arrested a man charged in connection with the shooting of a man who was struck by gunfire and seriously injured while driving on Gaty Avenue in East St. Louis last month.

Eddie T. Johnson, 29, of Cahokia Heights faces charges of aggravated battery/discharge of a firearm, aggravated discharge of a firearm/occupied vehicle, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, according to a state police news release Tuesday.

The victim was driving in the 1500 block of Gaty Avenue at about 2 a.m. Sept. 22 when he was “struck by gunfire from outside his vehicle,” the release states.

“The victim was transported to a regional hospital with serious injuries.”

After the shooting, the East St. Louis Police Department requested assistance from Illinois State Police in the investigation.

Johnson was being held in the St. Clair County Jail on Tuesday.

An arrest warrant was issued on Oct. 22 and state police officers and the U.S. Marshals Service arrested Johnson in East St. Louis on Monday. A detention hearing for Johnson is scheduled for Wednesday morning.

No other information about the shooting was released.
