Two people are being held by Belleville Police Department following a shooting Friday night in the first block of East D Street, according to Lt. Shane Brown.

Police were notified at 7:50 p.m. Friday.

“It is currently under investigation,” Brown said Saturday. “We have two subjects in custody, and the case is being reviewed by the St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s office.”

Brown declined to provide further information.

It’s not known what prompted the shooting, how many victims were involved, whether they were killed or injured, if the people knew each other or if anyone else was in danger.

An employee who answered the phone at the Home Brite Ace Hardware store at 400 N. Illinois St. in Belleville said a shooting had occurred Friday night in an apartment above the store and that it involved tenants. She declined further comment.

The police department hadn’t posted anything about the shooting on its Facebook page as of early Saturday afternoon.

Police Chief Matt Eiskant couldn’t be reached for comment.

This story will be undated as more information becomes available.
