Madison County man arrested, charged in connection with fatal hit-and-run
A 67-year-old man faces three felony charges in connection with a fatal hit-and-run of a bicyclist last week.
The Madison County State’s Attorney’s office on Tuesday charged David A. Murray, 67, of Bethalto, with one count each of failure to report an accident resulting in a death, leaving the scene of an accident involving injury or death, and obstruction of justice.
According to a Madison County Sheriff’s Office report, Murray was driving a blue pickup truck north on Humbert Road in the evening hours of Dec. 29, when he struck Steven J. Coryell, 58, who also was headed north on a bicycle.
Murray fled the scene, according to charges.
In the meantime, first responders from the sheriff’s department and Godfrey Fire Department attempted to stabilize Coryell, who died of blunt trauma to the head and chest, according to Coroner Nicholas Novacich.
The Metro East Crash Assistance Team assisted with the reconstruction of this crash.
Sheriff’s department investigators later located the blue truck and arrested Murray, who remained in the Madison County Jail as of Tuesday, awaiting a pretrial detention hearing.
