Metro-east sheriff’s deputy exposed to fentanyl during car wreck
A car wreck on Interstate 64 sent a Washington County sheriff’s deputy to the hospital after he came into contact with fentanyl.
Deputy John Vincent was assisting emergency service workers in removing Tyler Weis, 41, from a vehicle around 9:30 p.m. on June 1. He slipped on debris and fell into the fentanyl, which was in Weis’ door, according to a release from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
“Deputy Vincent administered two doses of Narcan to himself,” the release said. “EMS transported Deputy Vincent to Washington County Hospital where he was treated for exposure to fentanyl.”
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, even contact to fentanyl through skin can result in “significant absorption” of the powerful opioid. It’s not clear how or how long Vincent was exposed to the drug. Narcan is effective in reversing the effects of opioids.
Chief Deputy Charles Carroll was not immediately available for comment.
The release said Deputy Vincent made a full recovery. Brittany Bateman, the office manager for the Sheriff’s Department, said the Illinois State Police had taken over the case.
Weis received three citations for possession of a controlled substance, DUI, and driving while his license was revoked, according to Washington County circuit clerk records.
