A 50-year-old Belleville man died after being shot in the 500 block of North 40th Street early Sunday morning.
Belleville police arrested a man in connection with the homicide, Lt. Col. Mark Heffernan said. The suspect’s name hasn’t been released pending charges.
St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr. identified the victim as Monzelle Mason, who resided in the 500 block of North 40th Street.
“A man was located on scene and taken into custody. That person is currently being held at the Belleville Police Department as the investigation continues,” Heffernan said.
Belleville police were dispatched to the scene after receiving a call about a disturbance involving a shooting. Officers found the victim in the front yard suffering with multiple gunshot wounds, said Heffernan. The officers rendered first aid until emergency medical services arrived, but were unable to save the man’s life.
“This is an active and ongoing investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available,” Heffernan said.
