Coroner IDs pedestrian killed in early morning hit-and-run in Belleville

A 33-year-old Mascoutah woman was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver Thursday morning on Green Mount Road near Eckert’s in Belleville and one suspect has been arrested, authorities said.

Emily Johnson of the 500 block of Augusta Street in Mascoutah was identified as the pedestrian, according to St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr.

Johnson was pronounced deceased in the emergency room of St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in O’Fallon at 4:35 a.m., Dye said.

“Belleville Police Detectives have located the vehicle involved in the accident and have taken a suspect into custody,” the police department said in a news release.

The name of the person arrested was not released since formal charges have not been announced.

The Belleville Police Department dispatched officers to the 900 block of South Green Mount Road at 3:30 a.m. to investigate the incident.

At the scene, officers along with emergency medical personnel located the victim, Belleville Master Sgt. Daniel Collins said.

Police learned at the scene that the woman “had life threatening injuries,” Collins said. The driver of the vehicle that stuck Johnson fled the scene before first responders arrived, Collins said.
