Man barricades himself in Columbia home in standoff with police
Police have surrounded a Columbia home in a standoff with a suspect who barricaded himself after deputies responded to the home at 12:30 a.m. Wednesday on a report of a stolen firearm from the residence, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department said.
“Upon arrival, deputies encountered the suspect inside the home’s basement,” the sheriff’s department said in a news release Wednesday. “The subject refused to comply with commands, barricaded himself inside, and made threats toward law enforcement.
“Negotiations with the subject are ongoing.”
The home is in the 1800 block of Meadow Court.
“There is no immediate threat to the broader community, but out of caution, the area has been secured,” the news release stated.
The name of the person barricaded in the home has not been released.
There are about 20 police cars and an armored personnel carrier near the home.
Agencies assisting the sheriff’s department include the Columbia Police Department, the Waterloo Police Department, Illinois State Police and Columbia EMS.
