A Cahokia man accused of stealing an ambulance in Granite City this week now faces five felony charges.

According to court documents filed Friday that the Madison County Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook: Montez D. Williams, 36, was charged with one count of Offenses Related to Motor Vehicles, two counts of Aggravated Battery for alleged actions against law enforcement officers, and two counts of Aggravated Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a Police Officer.

All are Class 2 felonies, with the exception of the last two counts, which are Class 4 felonies.

On Thursday, Williams is alleged to have stolen a MedStar ambulance soon after paramedics arrived at Granite City’s Gateway Regional Medical Center in the ambulance. The suspect was the only occupant of the ambulance.

This prompted a vehicle pursuit that spanned “several surrounding communities” and required assistance from multiple law enforcement agencies, a press release from the Madison County Sheriff’s Office says.

As the ambulance traveled northbound on Illinois Route 111 entering South Roxanna, it left the roadway to avoid spike strips, then crashed and rolled over. The suspect was taken into custody, and, with minor injuries from the crash, was later transported back to Gateway Regional Medical Center, the release says.

There, the suspect spat at nurses and assaulted a security guard and police officer, the release says. Williams was in custody at the Madison County Jail as of Saturday morning, the jail confirmed.

Online court records did not list his next court date as of Saturday morning.

All are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
