Belleville police investigating east-end shooting, arrest juvenile suspect

A juvenile suspect was taken into police custody after multiple shots were fired at an east Belleville strip mall, Belleville police say.

The shooting occurred in the 1900 block of Lebanon Avenue at about 4:20 p.m. Tuesday, according to a release from the Belleville Police Department.

Officers responded to the report of gunfire after witnesses said they’d heard multiple gunshots and saw a person fleeing the area. The officers found evidence “consistent with a shooting,” the release stated, and located the person who reported being fired upon.

Belleville Police Department Assistant Chief Mark Heffernan confirmed there were no injuries or known property damage as a result of the incident. He would not comment on the nature of the evidence collected at the scene.

A juvenile suspect was later identified and taken into police custody, police said.

“Due to the suspect’s age, no additional identifying information will be released,” the release stated. “At this time, investigators believe this was an isolated incident.”

An investigation by the Belleville Police crime scene and detectives unit is ongoing. They ask anyone who may have witnessed the shooting or have any additional information to call the police department at (618) 234-1212 or CrimeStoppers at (866) 371-8477.
