Two seriously injured in shooting at apartment building near Belleville
A shooting at an apartment building in unincorporated Belleville just before noon Saturday has sent two people to the hospital.
St. Clair County dispatch received a 911 call at 11:57 a.m. from someone reporting a disturbance at an apartment building in the 7700 block of Woodcliffe Drive, according to a Facebook post by Lt. James Hendricks of the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department.
“While gathering further details about the call, it was explained that several shots had been fired at the location, resulting in two victims suffering from gunshot wounds,” the release said.
“Officers from the Belleville Police Department responded to the area to assist and were on scene shortly after the initial emergency calls were placed. Both victims were transported to a local hospital in serious condition.”
In a follow-up release, sheriff’s department Lt. James Hendricks said the incident involved an ex-boyfriend of the woman living in the apartment. The male suspect entered the apartment by kicking in the door and door frame, he said.
A male visitor inside retrieved a weapon and fired multiple shots at the suspect, who was struck multiple times. The woman also was hit by gunfire, though her injuries are non-life-threatening, Hendricks said through the release.
Emergency Medical Services transported the suspect to a local hospital in critical condition.
