It wasn’t long after Granite City Police offered a $5,000 reward for information leading the arrest of a man suspected of shooting one of their officers that D.J. Marshall, 26, was arrested.

Marshall is accused of firing at officers Friday afternoon, triggering a multi-agency manhunt that, according to authorities, ended shortly after midnight Saturday.

A Granite City Police Department Facebook post provided few details, only confirming that Marshall was in custody and thanking the public for its support and assistance in his capture.

According to Illinois State Police, Marshall was taken into custody at about 3 p.m. and is being held at the Madison County Jail awaiting charges.

“ISP, utilized K9 and an aircraft, and worked with the Granite City Police Department, Alton Police Department, Madison County Sheriff’s Office, local law enforcement, US Marshall Services and the FBI to search for Marshall,” the release stated. “This cooperative effort led to the apprehension of Marshall at approximately 3:00 a.m. in Granite City. He is currently housed at the Madison County jail pending charges.”

The incident began around 2:19 p.m. Friday in the 2000 block of Johnson Road, where officers responded to a report of an “unwanted subject.”

Upon arrival, the suspect immediately began firing at officers, striking one multiple times before fleeing on foot, Chief Gary Brooks said.

The injured officer was transported to SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital. Brooks did not provide specifics on the nature or severity of the officer’s injuries but later said the officer was able to speak and expressed hope for “a complete recovery.”

An emailed release from Illinois State Police Saturday morning said the officer is in stable condition.

Multiple agencies, including the Illinois State Police and the U.S. Marshals Service, established a search perimeter, sealing off Johnson Road for several blocks.

Students at Frohardt Elementary School, 2040 Johnson Road, were kept inside for more than three hours past the regular dismissal time for safety. They were released in shifts under police supervision to parents who presented valid identification, according to District 9 spokesperson Chris Mitchell.

Granite City Police identified Marshall as the suspect and released a prior booking photo in the early evening, warning residents that he was “armed and dangerous.”

According to police radio broadcasts recorded on Broadcastify, the search for Marshall initially went door-to-door. Officers also set up perimeters at 29th Place and on Madison Avenue as part of their efforts to locate him.

A $5,000 reward also was announced late Friday night.

It is unclear whether either of these factors are what led to Marshall’s capture.

Investigators continue to seek the public’s help. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Granite City Police Department at 618-877-6111, ext. 3.
