UPDATE 1/2/26: This article has been updated with information about the ages of the victims and the location of the double-stabbing in East St. Louis.

A Belleville man has been arrested and charged in a double-stabbing that left one man dead and injured another man in September in East St. Louis.

Jerry L. Campbell, 47, was arrested in St. Louis last week and on Wednesday he waived his right to a detention hearing on two counts of first-degree murder in St. Clair County, according to court records.

Charging documents allege Campbell, of the first block of Kansas Avenue in Belleville, fatally stabbed 64-year-old Charles Yoder of East St. Louis with a knife on Sept. 18.

Campbell also was indicted on charges of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery in the stabbing of Harold Sutterer, 52. A mob action charge alleges that Campbell “while acting together” with Yoder stabbed Sutterer.

The stabbings occurred in the 1400 block of Missouri Avenue at the Orr-Weathers apartment complex in East St. Louis, according to Illinois State Police.

The East St. Louis Housing Authority reported in mid-September that two men had been stabbed, including one fatally at the Orr-Weathers building. A spokesman for the housing authority could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

Campbell was being held in the St. Clair County Jail on Wednesday. He was booked into the jail on Monday after being transferred from a jail in St. Louis because he waived his right to an extradition hearing in Missouri.

Along with his St. Clair County charges, Campbell was charged in St. Louis on Dec. 22 with being a fugitive from out of state.

An Illinois State Police agent presented the stabbing case to the St. Clair County grand jury in October.
