St. Clair County Board Member Bob Trentman confirmed Tuesday he was the victim of an alleged knife attack that led to the non-fatal shooting of the suspect by a sheriff’s deputy.

A suspect in a Sunday morning stabbing, who was later shot by a St. Clair County sheriff’s deputy, was charged Tuesday with six felony counts of aggravated domestic battery and aggravated assault of a police officer.

Court documents allege Clinton J. Trentman stabbed a family member, Robert Trentman, in the hand, arm, face and “about the hand” with a knife, and charged at three different sheriff’s deputies “with a weapon appearing to be a firearm, a pellet gun.”

St. Clair County Board member Bob Trentman confirmed Tuesday that the incident involved him and his son. He declined to comment further.

Bob Trentman, a Democrat, represents County Board District 14, which covers portions of Swansea and Shiloh. He has served on the board since 2012 and also is the St. Clair Township highway commissioner.

St. Clair County sheriff’s deputies responded Sunday morning to a report of a possible stabbing in the 2800 block of Old Collinsville Road. While investigating, deputies saw a person walking in the roadway near the residence displaying a firearm, according to a release from Illinois State Police.

A deputy fired their service weapon, striking the suspect once. Deputies struggled with the suspect while attempting to make an arrest, according to the release. The suspect was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his wounds. No deputies were injured, police said.

Charging documents do not specify which deputy shot Clinton Trentman. Bob Trentman did not want to discuss the injuries sustained by either him or his son.
