One woman killed, another injured in Belleville area shooting
One woman died and another was injured in a Saturday night shooting at the city limits between Belleville and Swansea, Belleville Police announced Sunday.
A man who police identified as the shooting suspect died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to authorities.
“At this time, there is no threat to the public,” Swansea Police stated Sunday. “The incident is believed to be isolated, and the individuals involved were known to each other.”
Police officers from Belleville and Swansea responded to the 1700 block of Jamestown Road around 11:19 p.m. Saturday in reference to “multiple shots fired.”
One female victim was found dead in the middle of the road, according to a news release from Belleville Police. Two other women were located inside a vehicle in an adjacent parking lot, and one of them was injured from gunfire, the news release stated.
Belleville Police led the homicide investigation. Investigators identified a “known acquaintance” of the victims as the suspect and broadcast a law enforcement alert for the suspect’s vehicle, the news release stated.
The Perry County, Missouri Sheriff’s Department attempted to pull the suspect vehicle over at around 2:30 a.m. Sunday when it was found traveling southbound on Interstate 55.
“Prior to law enforcement having contact with the suspect, he took his own life from what is believed to be self-inflicted gunshot wound,” the Belleville Police release stated.
The identities of the victims and suspect were not released Sunday.
