Early-morning shooting at Alton’s Oakwood Estates leaves man dead, suspect held
A man was shot and killed early Tuesday at the Alton Housing Authority’s Oakwood Estates complex, and a person of interest is in custody, according to Alton police.
Officers were called about 4:19 a.m. March 10 to the 700 block of Oakwood Estates after a 911 caller reported hearing gunshots in the area, the Alton Police Department said in a news release.
While officers were on the way, dispatchers received additional information that a man had been shot. Responding officers found the victim and rendered aid until Alton Fire Department EMS arrived and took over medical care. The man was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
At the same time, officers contacted a person of interest at an apartment within the complex. That person was taken into custody without incident and is being held at the Alton City Jail, police said.
Investigators said the preliminary investigation indicates the victim and the suspect knew each other and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The case remains under investigation by the Alton Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division. Anyone with information is asked to call the division at 618-463-3505, ext. 634.
