Police: No shots were fired in 17th Street disturbance in Belleville

Police investigating possible shots fired early Tuesday morning said Wednesday a person taken into custody in connection with the incident has been released, because officers learned no one had a gun.

According to Belleville Police Department Capt. John Moody, detectives interviewed people both locally and in St. Louis who were at the home in the 500 block of South 17th Street when the shots fired call was made around 2 a.m. but learned the caller mistook the sound of something hitting a car for gunfire. Moody said officers investigating at the scene found property damage consistent with a fight but never found a weapon or evidence of gunfire.

A driver, who fled the scene in the car that was damaged during the dispute and was arrested near Belleville Crossing, has been released from custody and will not be charged, Moody said.
