Illinois State Police arrested a 40-year-old Belleville man in connection with a shooting that left a person critically injured, authorities said.

Charles E. Little Jr. is charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery and unlawful possession of a firearm by a repeat felony offender, police said.

Washington Park police asked state police to assist with the investigation after the April 20 shooting near 47th Street and Caseyville Avenue, state police said. Officers found a victim with multiple gunshot wounds and had them transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The victim’s identity and current condition has not been released.

Little was taken into custody and the case was presented April 24 to St. Clair County State’s Attorney James Gomric, who filed the charges, state police said. Little is being held in the St. Clair County Jail pending a detention hearing.
