Family DNA helped jury reach verdict in Collinsville abduction, sexual assault

A jury has convicted a Fayette County man in a 2022 kidnapping and sexual assault that originated at a Collinsville Starbucks.

Genealogical testing was the key evidence in the case and led to charges against Timothy J. Dubois Jr., 42, months after the crime. The investigative technique was popularized in the Golden State Killer case. His defense questioned the integrity of the DNA.

Dubois’ trial began Tuesday. After about an hour and a half of deliberations on Thursday, a Madison County jury found him guilty on all counts against him: four counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault, four counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, and two counts of aggravated kidnapping.

According to the prosecution’s timeline, on Veteran’s Day 2022, Dubois entered a 21-year-old woman’s car while she was waiting for a mobile order at the Starbucks in the Collinsville Crossing shopping center. He held the woman at knifepoint and told her to drive, directing her to a more remote residential area in Troy where he sexually assaulted her, according to her testimony during the trial.

In arguing their case, the prosecution called witnesses to present location data from the victim’s Apple Watch, DNA evidence from a used condom, a recorded confession taken at the Collinsville Police Department and surveillance footage of a car matching the suspect’s in the area.

The defense had argued the condom DNA was exposed to the elements for a week before it was collected and pointed to evidence the prosecution did not have, including footage of the abduction.
