Man accused of taping black lab’s mouth closed

A Belleville man has been charged in connection with the alleged abuse of a Labrador retriever.

According to St. Clair County State’s Attorney Brendan Kelly, Travis S. Young, 46, wrapped duct tape around the muzzle of a black lab named Sparky to keep the dog from opening its mouth.

The dog was unable to eat or drink while its muzzle was taped.

According to St. Clair County Animal Services Director Jim Jacquot, Sparky is less than a year old and is in good health. He said it appeared his life wasn’t in danger. Jacquot said it’s likely the dog would be put up for adoption at the conclusion of the investigation and any prosecution against Young.

Jacquot was not aware of the circumstances surrounding the incident, and Belleville police was unavailable for comment.

Young was charged with a misdemeanor count of cruel treatment in relation to the incident. He was jailed on $5,000 bail.
