Sex offender charged with photographing children

A registered sex offender faces new charges of photographing children in their own backyard.

Brian E. Sanders, 44, of Brighton has been charged with felony child photography by a sex offender. He is accused of photographing two children on a trampoline in their backyard in rural Bethalto.

Madison County Sheriff deputies were called to the children’s home after their mother said she observed a man doing business in the area for a private company approaching the children and speaking to them on Oct. 9.

The children, who had been playing on their backyard trampoline, said the man walked into their yard and asked if he could take video of them doing flips on the trampoline. They said he told them he wanted to use the video to teach his daughter how to do a flip. The children told police his phone wouldn’t manage video, but he did photograph them.

The mother, who was not identified by police, contacted Sanders’ employer to complain. Upon checking the Illinois State Police Sex Offender Registry and finding Sanders’ name, she called police, who questioned and eventually arrested Sanders.

Sanders had been convicted of predatory sexual assault of a child in 1998. The child was 9 years old at the time; Sanders was 27.
