Police: One suspect related to elderly victims who slept through burglary
Authorities say two people broke into a Caseyville home while its residents slept, stealing cash before sneaking off into the night.
Michael Gryzmala, 50, and Meagan Egler, 31, were each charged Monday with one count of residential burglary, a Class 1 felony, according to St. Clair County court records.
Caseyville police Officer Gerard Spratt said Egler is related to the victims, who are both in their 70s.
According to police reports, the couple climbed in through a window to gain access to a house in the 8800 block of Garden Avenue, where a pair of senior citizens live, to steal an undisclosed amount of money.
They were able to get in and navigate the dark home, find the cash and get away without waking the residents.
“Egler is an estranged family member of the victims,” Spratt said. “The suspects knew how to gain entry into the home and where to find the money due to them being in the house in the past.”
The suspects were jailed on $50,000 bail each.
