St. Louis man who fled in Mississippi River charged in string of burglaries

A man whose attempt to flee from police Wednesday morning included trying to swim the Mississippi River is facing seven felony charges, Granite City police said.

Daytrail J. Brown, 20, of St. Louis was arrested Wednesday morning and charged Thursday with five counts of burglary, a count of attempted fleeing and eluding, and a count of possession of a stolen vehicle. He was in the Granite City Jail on $750,000 bond as of Thursday afternoon.

According to a police statement, Granite City officers located a black 1991 Jeep Cherokee traveling southbound on Illinois 3 near the McKinley Bridge around 9:15 a.m. Wednesday. The Jeep matched the description given to police by victims of a string of burglaries that occurred up and down Illinois 3.

Police pursued the Jeep along the highway until it stopped near the bridge. That’s when Brown allegedly got out of the Jeep and ran toward the river. Police say Brown tried to swim away from officers, who did not enter the water. Brown eventually swam back to shore and was arrested.

Items reported stolen in the earlier burglaries were found in the Jeep Brown was driving, which also was stolen, according to police.
