Police arrest suspect in Belleville sexual assault

The Belleville Police Department has made an arrest in connection with a sexual assault case that happened earlier this week.

The accused person is a 22-year-old male, according to police department reports. His name has not been released pending formal charges. Police said they will apply for charges Friday with the St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Police believe the man is responsible for attacking a 56-year-old woman Sunday at 1:30 a.m. on the bike trail near Sixth and Centreville Avenue as she walked home from a business in the 1500 block of West Main Street.

The victim said she was approached by a man she did not know who pushed her to the ground and sexually assaulted her. She described the attacker to police as a black male about 5-foot-5 to 5-foot-7 and weighing 150 to 170 pounds.

Police said they were able to find evidence at the scene and develop strong leads that pointed them to the suspect during their investigation.
