Police declare Wesclin Middle School safe after possible threat

Police and bomb technicians declared Wesclin Middle School safe Thursday evening after an afternoon scare prompted the evacuation of the school and cancellation of evening activities.

“A full sweep of the middle school was completed by the Scott Air Force Base bomb squad with assistance from our local law enforcement. Nothing was found and the building is safe,” Wesclin District 3 Superintendent Jennifer Filyaw said in a statement to parents Thursday evening.

School is on for Friday.

In a previous statement to parents Thursday afternoon, Filyaw said a note was found on the floor of one of the school’s bathrooms that read “Do not open explosion.”

“The middle school has been evacuated, all evening activities have been canceled, and the authorities have been contacted. The police department is in the process of coordinating a sweep of the middle school,” Filyaw said. “While we might believe that this is not a threat, we must take it very seriously.”

Filyaw said the note was not accompanied by anything else that indicated the school was at risk.
