‘Unusual case’: Mascoutah man shot during apparent burglary

Police are trying to find who shot a 51-year-old man during an apparent burglary early Saturday.

The victim, whose name was not released, suffered a gunshot wound to his chest. He was taken to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis after he was initially taken to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Belleville.

Police Chief Bruce Fleshren said in a news release that the shooting appears to have occurred in the house at 13 S. Market St. during a possible burglary about 1:30 a.m.

The victim had just moved in and the house did not appear to be occupied at the time, which may have led to the burglary attempt, police said.

“This is an unusual case occurring Mascoutah, and the department is working hard to develop any information to make an arrest,” Fleshren said in the news release.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Mascoutah Police Department at 618-566-2255
