Belleville man sentenced to 14 years in prison for heroin sale to informant

A Belleville man will spend the next 14 years in prison after he was sentenced Wednesday in connection to drugs and weapons charges.

Joseph R. Carr, 25, was convicted of distribution of a controlled substance, carrying a firearm during a drug trafficking crime, possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

According to a statement from Acting Southern Illinois U.S. Attorney James Porter, Carr was arrested on April 15 after he sold heroin to an undercover informant in Belleville. Carr was armed at the time of the sale. He pleaded guilty to the charges in September.

In addition to the prison time, Carr will be on supervised release for five years following his release and was ordered to pay $800 in fees.
