Police: Collinsville High student brought gun to school

A Collinsville High School student was in custody after allegedly bringing an unloaded gun to school Thursday.

Collinsville Police were alerted shortly after noon Thursday that a student had brought a firearm to school in his backpack at Collinsville High School. The Unit 10 school resource officer and security personnel removed the student from his classroom and found the unloaded firearm inside his backpack, according to a statement from Collinsville Police.

There was no ammunition found with the gun, police said.

“At no point during the investigation or prior to was there ever a threat conveyed to harm any students or faculty, and we do not believe that this student intended to use the firearm,” read the statement from police.

The juvenile student, who was not identified by police, was taken into custody and has been transported to the St. Clair County Juvenile Detention Center pending formal charges.
