A Collinsville man has been charged with aggravated battery of a child after a 14-month-old baby boy was found unresponsive and not breathing.

Steven A. Williams, 28, is being held on $500,000 bail on the charge,, which is a Class X felony. Police said he is the father of the injured child.

Collinsville Police Department Maj. Brett Boerm said the baby is still alive but that he couldn’t release any additional information about the boy’s condition or about his prospects for recovery.

“I can tell you that the case continues to be under investigation and that there may be additional charges down the road depending on which way the investigation leads us,” Borem said.

On Feb. 23, the Collinsville Fire Department was called to 149 Idlerun Drive because of the medical issues concerning the boy, Boerm said.

The baby was taken to a metro-east hospital and then was transferred to a St. Louis hospital, where his condition was stabilized. Staff at the St. Louis hospital determined that his injuries were “indicative and consistent” with child abuse.

The case was submitted by police to the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office the next day and the felony charge was issued Friday.
