St. Libory man accused of giving 14-month-old a skull fracture

A St. Libory man faces felony charges of aggravated battery of a 14-month-old child.

According to St. Clair Country Sheriff’s Department reports, Gary A. Smith was the live-in boyfriend of the mother of the child Jan. 26 when investigators got a call to the woman’s residence at 403 N. Second Street in Dupo.

“He was in care of the child by himself at the time,” St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department investigator Scott Toth said. “The child was found to have a severe head injury and was transported to a St. Louis hospital.”

The child remains in medical care more than three months later after suffering a skull fracture which caused blindness in one eye.

The mother of the child, whose name was not released because she has not been charged in connection with the case, is under investigation by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, Toth said. The child is in the custody of a family member.

Smith, who was charged late last month, remains in the St. Clair County Jail, as of Wednesday, on $500,000 bail.
