Granite City chiropractor pleads guilty to fraud, money laundering

A Granite City chiropractor has pleaded guilty to federal health-care fraud and money laundering charges.

Bridget Brasfield, 45, who lives in Edwardsville but operates her business out of Granite City, could face up to 20 years in prison and a $500,000 fine when she is sentenced Aug. 30.

Brasfield admitted in her plea that between 2011 and 2014 she submitted about $500,000 in fraudulent medical bills to various health-care benefit plans, including Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, the Federal Employees Health Benefit Program, Blue Cross-Blue Shield of Illinois and Coventry Insurance, according to acting U.S. Attorney James L. Porter.

Brasfield claimed that a medical doctor had provided services to patients in her office at that time. It was later determined the doctor was out of the country during the period when the services were allegedly provided.
