When students return to East St. Louis Senior High School after the winter break, they will be welcomed by a new principal.

Alonzo Nelson will be running the school on an interim basis beginning January 4, district officials said.

Sydney Stigge-Kaufman, executive director of communications and strategic partnerships for District 189, said Nelson is a 38-year veteran of the district, including 14 years in administrative roles.

Ten of the 14 years Nelson worked in administration, he was at the alternative center as interim principal.

Previous principal Valencia Hawkins has been reassigned to the district office as an interim director, according to Stigge-Kaufman.

“Valencia Hawkins had previously served as a director based in the district office and will return to an interim director role as part of internal reassignments that will improve overall district per actions,” Stigge-Kaufman said.
