Searching for college scholarships? Here’s some opportunities for metro-east students

As high school seniors conclude studies in the next couple months and college students begin planning for next year, many are searching for financial assistance for tuition. We’ve rounded up some metro-east and U.S. scholarships that are still accepting applications.

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid is due “as soon as possible” after Oct. 1 in Illinois, and Missouri’s deadline was April 1. Corrections or updates must be submitted by Sept. 10.

Institutions of higher education may have their own deadlines for financial aid.

An online assessment is available to estimate what federal aid may be available to you.

Metro-east scholarships

American Association of Blacks in Energy Southeastern Missouri/Southern Illinois Chapter

Amount: Up to $2,000

Application deadline: 11:59 p.m. May 1

Who qualifies:

  • Graduating high school seniors who plan to attend an accredited college or university next semester

  • 3.0 unweighted GPA

  • Black, Hispanic and/or Indigenous students

  • Preference is given to those pursuing a major in business, a physical science, technology, engineering or mathematics

  • Resident of southern Illinois or eastern Missouri

  • Official transcript with unweighted GPA

  • A 500-word essay

Gregory F Yank “Servant Leader” Scholarship

Amount: $2,500

Application deadline: May 1

Who qualifies:

  • High school seniors, college students, graduate students and trade school students

  • Reside in Rotary District 6510 or attend school within the district

  • B average or higher

What’s required:

  • Resume detailing school involvement, citing leadership roles

  • Resume of community involvement and volunteer work, citing leadership roles; all full- or part-time jobs

  • Educational and career plan

  • List of scholarships (with dollar amounts) you are receiving

  • An essay about how the concept of “servant leader” affects, has affected or will affect your life

Kiwanis Club of O’Fallon

Amount: Two separate scholarships valued at $500 each

Application deadline: April 30

Who qualifies:

  • Graduating seniors at O’Fallon Township High School

  • Pursuing vocational/technical training, for Wayne McKinley Scholarship

  • Studying business or a business-related field, for Clyde “Tex” Glenn Scholarship

  • Accepted to an accredited higher education institution

What’s required:

  • Class rank

  • GPA

  • SAT and/or ACT scores

  • Resume or list of community service and volunteer activities

AFCEA Scott-St. Louis Chapter

Amount: Typically between $1,000 to $3,000

Application deadline: May 2 (postmarked)

Who qualifies:

  • High school seniors or current college students in the Scott Air Force Base or St. Louis region

  • Enrolled in programs or pursuing classes related to electronics, communications, engineering, information systems, computer technology, physics or mathematics

What’s required:

  • Record of academic achievement, community service and extracurricular activities

  • Acceptance to or attendance at a university, community college or technical school

  • Impact to student if scholarship is not awarded

  • An essay with 500 or fewer words detailing the applicant’s goals for their course of study and, if applicable, their service to their country as a member of the military, a civil servant or a contractor in the defense or homeland security industrial base

Acorn Equality Fund Scholarship

Amount: Five separate scholarships, from $1,000 to $4,000

Application deadline: Sept. 23 (postmarked)

Who qualifies:

  • Illinois residents in any county excluding Cook, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry and Will

  • Member of or ally to LGBTQ+ community, or child of parent in LGBTQ+ community

  • Attend or plan to attend any accredited postsecondary institution

What’s required:

  • Educational history

  • Official transcripts

  • Three references

  • Two essays, each 500 or fewer words

Scholarships opens across the U.S.

North American Network Operators’ Group Scholarship Program

Amount: $10,000

Application deadline: 3 p.m. CDT May 18 (The sponsor reserves the right to close the program early when 50 applications have been received. Applicants are encouraged to apply early.)

Who qualifies:

  • Current post-secondary undergraduate or graduate students

  • Pursuing a degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, network engineering or telecommunications (for graduate students only)

  • Plan to enroll in at least six credits at an accredited two- or four-year college or university for the entire upcoming academic year

  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or its equivalent)

What’s required:

  • Current, complete transcript of grades

  • 500-word statement describing how the scholarship money would impact your college career

  • One online recommendation form, which must be submitted on your behalf by 3 p.m. CDT May 21

Naviste’s Next Steminist Scholarship Program

Amount: $10,000

Application deadline: 3 p.m. CDT May 17

Who qualifies:

  • Identify as female

  • A U.S. citizen or permanent resident

  • 25 years old or younger as of May 17

  • Minimum GPA of 3.00/4.00

  • High school senior/graduate or current undergraduate student enrolled or planning to enroll full-time in an undergraduate program at an accredited four-year college or university in the 2022 to 2023 academic year

  • Eligible majors: computer science, computer engineering, computer hardware engineering, computer software engineering, electrical engineering, game and interactive media design, information systems, information technology, management information systems, systems engineering

What’s required:

  • Current, complete transcript of grades

  • 60-second unlisted YouTube video describing your dream career in science, technology, engineering or mathematics

  • One online recommendation form, which must be submitted on your behalf by 3 p.m. CDT May 20

The Ralph Center Art Scholarship: Promoting Diversity in the Arts

Amount: $5,000

Application deadline: May 1

Who qualifies:

  • Applicants who are at least one of the following ethnicities: African American, Native American, Hispanic, Latino or Asian and Pacific Islander

  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident

  • Current high school senior, undergraduate or graduate student

  • Intends to be registered as a full-time student in the fall

  • Minimum GPA of 3.00

What’s required:

  • Current or most recent GPA

  • ACT or SAT score

  • Description of extracurricular activities, awards, sports, work-related efforts, etc.

  • Answers to scholarship questions, including top three core values, defining life moment, obstacles

  • Two- to three-minute video

Against The Grain Production Artistic Scholarship

Amount: $1,000

Application deadline: May 31

Who qualifies:

  • High school seniors, undergraduate or graduate students

  • Ethnicity must be at least 25% Asian American and/or Pacific Islander

  • Eligible majors: film, theater, fashion, photography, graphic design, dance, music, journalism, mass communications, etc.

  • Minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0

What’s required:

  • Demonstration of leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular or other activities

  • Transcript

  • Artistic portfolio

  • Resume

  • Letter of recommendation

  • Essay with 500 or fewer words

Lead with Languages Teacher Scholarship Program

Amount: $1,500 per academic year, renewable for three years after initial award

Application deadline: 5 p.m. EST May 27

Who qualifies:

  • High school senior

  • Accepted and planning to attend an accredited U.S. postsecondary institution, leading to credentialing as a language educator

  • Have taken at least two years of the same language in high school or present documentation of proficient results

  • GPA of 3.0/4.0

What’s required:

  • High school transcript

  • College acceptance letter

  • Personal essay of 200 or fewer words

  • Letter of recommendation from your language teacher in high school
