McKendree University has been named a great place to work by the Chronicle of Higher Education.

The Lebanon-based school is the only local institution on this year’s list and is one of only 42 colleges and universities across the country to make the magazine’s honor roll of “Great Colleges to Work For.”

“We are delighted to once again be honored as a ‘Great College to Work For,’” Mckendree University president James Dennis said. “It is a testament to the quality of our faculty and staff and their ability to work toward the common goal of providing an excellent working and learning environment.”

The Chronicle of Higher Education compiles the list using data from a survey of 44,000 employees of colleges and universities across the country. Survey results are based on a two-part assessment process: an institutional audit that captured demographics and workplace policies from each institution; and a survey administered to full-time faculty, administrators and professional support staff.

“These colleges are the best of the best,” The Chronicle announced on its website, chronicle.com. “Those that make the Honor Roll are cited most often across all recognition categories.”

Mckendree was named to the honor roll after being named a top performer in seven categories. They are:

▪ Having a collaborative governance

▪ Confidence in senior leadership

▪ Job satisfaction

▪ Professional and career development programs

▪ Supervisior or department chair relationships

▪ Teaching environment

▪ Tenure clarity and process

McKendree, according to the study, has an average salary of $141,848 for admistrators, $61,948 for full-time faculty and $43,282 for non-faculty professionals.

It has 98 full time faculty members and 137 administrators and non-faculty professionals.

The school’s turnover rate is 8 percent for faculty and 13 percent for other staff.

The only other area school to make the list is the St. Louis College of Pharmacy.
