See which 2 Illinois college campuses were named among ‘most beautiful’ in the US
Two Illinois university campuses were recently named among the 30 “most beautiful” in the nation, according to a recent report.
The Feb. 19 report from magazine Travel + Leisure, “The 30 Most Beautiful College Campuses Across the United States” named the University of Chicago No. 21, and Northwestern University landed in 29th.
Travel + Leisure found the University of Chicago, located in Hyde Park, stood out for its botanical garden setting and unique architecture.
“Be sure to pay attention to details: many of the gargoyles on the ivy-covered buildings date back to the early 1890s, when the campus was constructed,” Travel + Leisure’s analysis reads.
The University of Chicago is ranked No. 6 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, earning particularly high marks for a low student-faculty ratio, 87% four-year graduation rate and high median salary for graduates.
The university is very selective, accepting just 4% of applicants. Total estimated cost of attendance, before any scholarships or financial aid, was $98,301 for the 2025 to 2026 academic year.
Northwestern University was distinguished by the Gothic-inspired architecture sported by some of its buildings. Travel + Leisure staff also found the Alice Millar Chapel with stained-glass windows was a “must-see.”
“Adding to its appeal, the university is set on the shore of Lake Michigan and flanked by sandy beaches,” Travel + Leisure’s report reads.
Similarly to the University of Chicago, Northwestern University also excels in academic rankings, landing in 7th place nationally per U.S. News & World Report. Some of Northwestern’s strongest performances were 19th place in “best value schools” and 17th place for undergraduate engineering programs.
Northwestern’s acceptance rate is 8%, and its estimated cost of attendance for 2025 to 2026 was $96,236.
