Belleville junior high hosts Internet safety talk for parents

Belleville District 118 is hosting an Internet specialist from the attorney general’s office. Chris Feller will speak to parents of children in any district at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Central Junior High, 1801 Central School Road, Belleville.

The presentation will be about an hour, Feller said, and is intended to help parents become aware of the media their children might be engaging.

“We realize technology is great ... but we’re really about parenting when you’re on these, taking an active interest in what kids are doing online,” she said.

The attorney general’s “Stay Connected, Stay Informed” website at http://www.illinoisattorneygeneral.gov/cyberbullying/ lists some of the trending sites that children are using, including YouTube and FaceTime.

“Third through fifth-graders are starting with Instagram,” Feller said, adding that each age group has different challenges and interests online.

At Monday’s seminar, Feller will talk about basic account setup and turning on privacy limits on a child’s device, among other topics.
