Hang-gliders crash into California park, killing man and injuring woman, officials say

A man died in a hang-glider crash at a Milpitas park that also seriously injured a woman on the tandem flight, California authorities told news outlets.

The two crashed about noon Monday, May 30, at Ed R. Levin County Park, firefighters told KNTV. The man was pronounced dead, and the woman was hospitalized in critical condition.

The pair were harnessed together on a tandem flight after taking off from the highest point at the park, which is popular with hang-gliders and paragliders, Santa Clara County sheriff’s officials told KGO.

They crashed on the 2,500-foot Monument Peak, where extremely rugged terrain complicated rescue efforts, authorities told KTVU.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, KRON reported.

The identity of the man has not been released, KGO reported. The woman was airlifted to a regional medical center, but her current medical condition is not known.

Milpitas is a city of about 80,000 people, north of San Jose in the San Francisco Bay Area.
