Family wakes to find dad fatally injured by homemade fireworks blast, Hawaii cops say
A 35-year-old man building homemade fireworks has died following an explosion at his Puna home, Hawaii police reported.
The blast woke his wife and three children sleeping in the home at 2 a.m. Saturday, May 28, Hawaii police said in a news release.
Rescuers found the man on the floor with a critical wound to his abdomen, police said. He later died after being airlifted to a medical center.
The man had been building homemade fireworks before the blast, the release said. His wife and children were not injured.
An interagency bomb squad, the FBI and the ATF are assisting in the investigation, police said.
Investigators recovered explosives used to make fireworks, firearms and 214 marijuana plants from the home, the release said.
