A child was among two people who died after timber fell from a truck and hit a car in North Carolina, officials said.

A tractor-trailer driver was hauling a load north on U.S. Highway 601 when state troopers said the truck crossed the center line and flipped. That’s when logs spilled from the truck and struck a Nissan that was going in the opposite direction on Wednesday, Aug. 10, according to officials.

The impact caused the car to veer into an embankment in Surry County, Master Trooper Ned Moultrie with the N.C. State Highway Patrol told McClatchy News in a phone interview.

The driver of the Nissan and her child passenger died at the scene. Officials identified the driver as 42-year-old April Hill of Dobson, a town in Surry County and roughly 45 miles northwest of Winston-Salem.

Hill’s family told WGHP that the child was her 5-year-old son.

State troopers reported being called to the crash just before 6 a.m. near Highway 601’s intersection with Chandler Road.

As of early Aug. 11, officials said charges were pending in the case.
