Dad hiking with 6-year-old son falls backward into creek and dies, Arizona cops say
A 51-year-old man died after falling backward into a creek while on a hike with his 6-year-old son, Arizona deputies say.
The pair had traveled from “Tucson to camp in the area,” the man’s uncle told Yavapai County deputies, according to a Monday, June 10, Facebook post from the sheriff’s office.
After the two left the uncle’s home, the man called his uncle saying he was lost, deputies said.
The uncle drove to Lawrence Crossing Campground in Rimrock, where he found his nephew’s car, deputies said.
When he trekked down to the creek, deputies said the uncle found his nephew face down in a few inches of water.
The 6-year-old told investigators he saw his father fall “backwards in the water,” adding that his father was not able to breathe and “wouldn’t get out.”
Family members took the boy home, and he will be reunited with his mother, deputies said.
An “investigation into the tragedy” is ongoing, according to deputies.
Rimrock is about a 200-mile drive northwest from Tucson.
