120-pound dog was found in rough shape. Now the ‘gentle giant’ is ready for a new home
A 120-pound stray dog was found in rough shape, with so much fur that it was difficult for him to move.
Now, months after getting a much-needed haircut, the “gentle giant” waits for a second chance in North Carolina.
“This wonderful boy is still available and ready to find his forever home, where he can live the relaxed and loving life he deserves,” Abby Richardson, animal welfare manager for Lake Norman Humane, told McClatchy News in a Nov. 19 email.
Yeti the dog is up for adoption after he was picked up as a stray. He landed at another shelter before being transferred to Lake Norman Humane in July.
“Although Yeti was microchipped, sadly, his previous owners never came to reclaim him,” Richardson wrote. “When he arrived, he was in rough shape, with his fur so heavily matted that it was causing painful skin irritation and wounds.”
Yeti is at least part Great Pyrenees, a breed known for having two coats of fur. A groomer volunteered to help with his tricky hair removal process, leading to the pup’s dramatic transformation, photos posted on Facebook in August show.
“Yeti quickly became a favorite among our staff and volunteers,” Richardson wrote. “He is a sweet and gentle giant who adores people.”
Yeti also has become known as a calm and lazy dog who’s been caught on camera sleeping.
“As you can see he’s a master at lounging, on the couch, in the car, really wherever,” the shelter wrote Nov. 15 on Facebook. “This guy can snooze pretty much anywhere.”
Despite his easygoing nature, Yeti has enjoyed going on hiking adventures with his foster mom. He also has a high-maintenance side when it comes to food.
“While he can be a bit of a princess (legend says people ball up his food in little meatballs because that’s the way he likes it), he is the royalty you need in your home,” the shelter wrote.
As of Nov. 19, the shelter’s website listed the 3-year-old pup among the animals waiting for new homes. Details about the facility’s adoption process can be found at lakenormanhumane.org.
Lake Norman Humane is in Mooresville, a roughly 25-mile drive north from uptown Charlotte.
