A loving dog was adopted — then returned to the shelter “without explanation.”

Now, more than 100 days after she was surrendered, the North Carolina dog still waits for a home.

“She has been through so much but hasn’t let it dim her sweet spirit,” the Forsyth Humane Society wrote Dec. 18 in a Facebook post. “Despite everything, Diamond has remained loyal, gentle, and full of love to give.”

Diamond is up for adoption after a journey that started in 2020, when she landed at the Winston-Salem shelter as a stray. Soon after her arrival, she was adopted, the humane society wrote on social media and an email to McClatchy News.

But then this summer, “she was brought into our building and dropped off without explanation,” the animal organization wrote.

Diamond is described as a cuddly mixed-breed dog who “greets you with full-body wiggles.” She also “loves to sniff” and soak up attention.

“She’s almost 7 years old so she doesn’t quite have the same energy as her younger self, but we think she would still enjoy being in a more active home,” Malinda Massey, marketing manager for the shelter, wrote in the email. “As long as she has someone to love on, she’ll be a happy camper.”

Diamond, who is being treated for heartworm disease, received a $1,000 donation toward her medical care. She’s picky about furry friends, so the shelter believes she would do best as the only dog in her next home.

As Diamond waited for a second chance, the shelter discovered she could escape its outdoor kennels. So, workers kept her inside and showered her with extra walks. For the past few months, she reportedly has been thriving in a foster home.

“All we need now is her perfect match,” the shelter wrote.

As of Dec. 19, the shelter’s website listed Diamond among the animals in need of owners. Details about its adoption process can be found at forsythhumane.org.

“The saying holds true for this one — Diamond IS a girl’s best friend,” the shelter wrote.
