A North Carolina police officer and an EMT helped a suspect during the beginning of a child sexual abuse investigation, leading to the destruction of “key evidence,” a sheriff’s office said.

Jennifer Aree Myers, a 44-year-old Brookford Police Department officer in Catawba County, and Benjamin Geoffrey Myers, a 38-year-old Davidson County EMT, were arrested Sept. 26, the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office said in a Sept. 28 news release.

They are both charged with one count of felony accessing government computers and one count of obstruction of justice, according to the sheriff’s office.

Information on their legal representation was not immediately available.

The charges against Jennifer Myers and Benjamin Myers, both from Denton, are related to an investigation into Jeremy Lanning Amburn, 43, the main suspect in a child sexual abuse investigation, the sheriff’s office said.

The sexual abuse was reported on Aug. 25 and happened at a home in Denton “as well as other locations in the surrounding area,” according to authorities.

A 40-year-old woman, Angela Carpenter Amburn, “actively facilitated” the abuse, the sheriff’s office said.

As authorities investigated, Jennifer Myers and Benjamin Myers accessed information on the investigation through government computers and notified Jeremy Amburn, leading to evidence being destroyed, according to the sheriff’s office.

Jennifer and Benjamin Myers are married and friends with Jeremy and Angela Amburn, who are also married, according to deputies, WFMY-TV reported.

In a statement to the TV station, the Brookford Police Department said Jennifer Myers lost her job with the department on Sept. 26, the day of her arrest. She joined the department on July 2 and worked while she was training and on supervised status.

Davidson County EMS director Alton Hanes confirmed to McClatchy News via email on Sept. 30 that Benjamin Myers stopped working as an EMT on Sept. 29.

The Brookford Police Department did not immediately respond to an inquiry from McClatchy News on Sept. 30.

Jennifer and Benjamin Myers are now detained at the Davidson County Detention Center, according to the sheriff’s office.

“Benjamin is being held on a $1,500 secured bond and Jennifer is being held on a $5,000 secured bond,” the sheriff’s office said.

Benjamin Myers is due in court on Dec. 1 and Jennifer Myers is due to appear the next day, according to authorities.

Denton is about a 60-mile drive northeast from Charlotte.
