USPS employee dies in workplace accident weeks after engagement, MI reports say
Weeks after his engagement, an Air Force veteran working at a USPS facility was found dead in a mail machine, Michigan reports say.
Firefighters in Allen Park said they found body of 36-year-old USPS maintenance worker Nicholas John Acker in a mail processing machine, according to WILX.
The discovery was made after Acker’s fiancée told authorities Acker did not arrive home from work, the station reported.
Acker was believed to have been in the machine for six to eight hours before he was discovered Nov. 8, firefighters told WDIV.
Allen Park Police Detective Lt. Jason Dobbertin said Acker’s death is not considered suspicious, according to the Detroit Free Press.
It’s unclear what led to Acker’s death, with an investigation reportedly ongoing.
“The United States Postal Service is deeply saddened by the loss of our employee at the Detroit Network Distribution Center (NDC) in Allen Park, MI,” USPS said in a statement to the Free Press. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. The NDC is fully operational, at this time.”
Acker’s fiancée of about two weeks — Stephanie Jaszcz — slammed that statement, noting to WDIV that they did not mention his name or veteran status.
“A man gone. A veteran ... A human being. And all you can think of is mail keeps moving? Inhumane. It’s gross,” Jaszcz told the station.
She described Acker as being “very generous,” with “sweetness and thoughtfulness ... his way of life,” WDIV reported.
“It’s not fair. You weren’t supposed to be taken from me,” she said on Facebook. “We had plans. We had rhythms. We had a life stitched together with inside jokes and quiet mornings and the way you always knew when I needed you to just hold my hand.”
Allen Park is about a 15-mile drive southwest from downtown Detroit.
