Donald Trump's Approval Rating Underwater on Key Issues: Poll
A new poll has found that President Donald Trump's approval rating remains underwater across several major issues facing his administration, including his overall job performance, handling of Iran, Israel policy and the U.S. economy.
The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll published on Friday found that Trump's approval ratings remained below 50 percent across every major issue measured.
The poll highlights the political challenges facing Trump as voters weigh his handling of both foreign policy and domestic issues. The findings also show that Trump's support remains highly polarized, with Republicans largely backing his approach while Democrats and independents remain broadly dissatisfied.
What To Know
The new poll found that 62 percent of adults disapprove of Trump's overall performance as president, while only 37 percent approve, unchanged from an AP-NORC poll conducted in May.
Trump's overall approval rating remained sharply divided along partisan lines, with 92 percent of Democrats disapproving of his performance, compared with 21 percent of Republicans and 71 percent of independents disapproving.
The AP-NORC poll surveyed 3,040 adults from June 11-17 using a sample drawn from NORC's probability-based AmeriSpeak Panel, which is designed to be representative of the U.S. population. The margin of sampling error was plus or minus 2.8 percentage points.
Regarding Iran, 65 percent of respondents said they disapproved of Trump's handling of the war, while only about one-third approved. The poll found that 53 percent of respondents believe U.S. military action against Iran has gone "too far," although that figure has declined slightly from 59 percent in March.
These views were also split across partisan lines, with 42 percent of Republicans saying the actions had been "about right" and 37 percent saying they were "not far enough." Comparatively, 82 percent of Democrats said the military action in Iran had “gone too far.”
The survey was conducted as Trump suggested a deal with Iran had been reached, but before it was signed.
The president also received low approval on Israel policy, with 64 percent of Americans disapproving.
The war began with joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28, before escalating into a wider confrontation that included disputes over the Strait of Hormuz and contributing to rising global oil prices.
Tensions between Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have recently increased as they have diverged on how to handle the Iran war, and Trump has criticized Israeli military actions in Lebanon.
On domestic issues, 66 percent of Americans disapproved of Trump's handling of the economy, while 59 percent disapproved of his approach to immigration.
